He shuffled into his kitchen, the floorboards groaning under his feet. Arthur hadn't touched his chili recipe in months. It used to be his pride and joy, the secret ingredient a blend of spices he’d painstakingly perfected. Now, "Arthur's Inferno Chili" was a hit at the local food truck, run by a flamboyant young man named Leo.

The aroma of simmering something spicy wafted in from the street, and Arthur’s stomach churned. He poured himself a whiskey, the amber liquid doing little to dispel the chill that had settled in his bones. He missed the satisfaction of creating something people loved.

He glanced at the newspaper clipping he'd ripped out, a picture of Leo grinning behind a steaming pot of chili. He tossed the paper into the trash, the act somehow both futile and necessary. It was as if a part of himself had been taken, leaving him with an empty space inside.
