The email notification popped up on his phone, the subject line a stark, unpleasant announcement. "Demolition confirmed." He barely registered the words; the message's weight settled on him. He felt oddly leaden, as though every limb had been weighted down. He had been putting off this trip for weeks.

He went to his window. The city sprawled before him, a concrete jungle indifferent to his emotions. The sun, a pale disc in the sky, offered no warmth. He felt adrift. He had always imagined himself returning to that house, to the familiar embrace of his past. Now, there was nothing.

He stared at the email again. He suddenly wished he’d gone back to visit it sooner, but the timing had never seemed quite right. There's no right time for this, he thought, a sense of resignation spreading through him. He rubbed his eyes, a weariness settling into his bones.
