He stared at the television, the image flickering like a dying flame. The news anchor was reporting on the scandal, the familiar voice of his literary hero, Dr. Evelyn Reed, now accused of stealing ideas. He felt detached, as if watching a play unfold.

The comfortable familiarity of his living room suddenly felt alien. He felt a deep, pervasive ache, a dull throb that resonated throughout his body. He wanted to go outside, but he felt unable to move.

He remembered the times he'd re-read Reed’s novels, finding refuge in her words. Now, the words felt like poisoned honey. He was unable to enjoy anything.

He picked up a book written by her, and placed it back on the shelf.
