"Can I at least finish this coffee?" Amelia asked, her voice a flat monotone. The university administrator across the desk merely sighed, shuffling papers. Her fingers tapped a nervous rhythm on the surface. The entire world felt muted. The vibrant campus, once brimming with promise, now seemed gray and lifeless.

The news had hit her like a physical blow. The scholarship, the reason she was here, gone. The carefully constructed plans for her future had dissolved into a confusing mist. Her throat felt tight, and she had trouble swallowing.

The administrator's canned apologies echoed in her ears. Excuses. Bureaucratic jargon. None of it made the ache in her chest any less potent. Amelia pushed her chair back, the sound scraping against the tile floor. She didn't bother to say goodbye as she turned and walked, a slow, deliberate pace, towards the exit, feeling the weight of the rejection on her back.
