The house seemed to shrink around her. The account – her daughter, Emily, flitting through a world of fashion and parties – felt like a slap in the face. She'd always tried to be supportive, to give Emily space. Now, she felt a burning sensation, a sudden, sharp betrayal.

She felt a physical ache, a dull throbbing in her temples. She sat, still, on the couch, the silence amplifying the echo of the revelations.
