The silence in the kitchen crackled with unspoken tension. Ben sat at the counter, methodically stirring his tea, the spoon clinking against the mug like a death knell. Across from him, Chloe chattered excitedly, sketching a doghouse design on a napkin. Her enthusiasm was a blinding light in the small, cramped space.

"He'd love this spot by the window," Chloe declared, her voice buoyant. Ben’s chest felt tight.

He closed his eyes for a moment, the image of a barking dog, a constant demand on his time and attention, a suffocating presence. He felt completely depleted. “It’s just… a lot, Chloe,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. The very idea of additional demands felt crushing.
