The air in Amelia’s cramped apartment felt thick and stagnant, reflecting the emptiness she felt. Every day was a blur of routine, each action a hollow echo. She was watching TV when she heard something she wrote, and her stomach immediately turned sour.

It was her hit, “Falling Stars,” but it was being performed by a teen pop sensation. The music video, slick and glossy, featured dancers and extravagant sets. Everything she stood against. The transformation was so complete, she felt like a stranger looking at her own creation. Her breath caught in her throat. She got up, and turned off the TV, feeling a deep, suffocating sense of displacement.
