Gemotions

Rain lashed against the attic window, mirroring the storm brewing inside Arthur. He pulled the dusty trunk closer, the musty scent of forgotten things filling his nostrils. His grandfather, a war hero, or so the family lore went. Arthur’s shoulders slumped as he popped the lock. He’d come up here hoping to find some distraction, some connection to the stoic man he'd never truly understood.

He lifted a stack of photographs. The first showed his grandfather, young and smiling, arm in arm with a woman who wasn't his grandmother. The caption, scrawled in faded ink, read, “Paris, 1943. My dearest Isabelle.” Arthur felt a strange hollowness settle in his chest. A hero with a secret? His fingers trembled as he went through the rest.

The rest of the photos showed a different man, a carefree man, not the stern patriarch of his childhood. Arthur sank onto the dusty floor, the weight of the trunk suddenly unbearable. He felt a profound sense of isolation, a disconnect from everything he'd believed.
