The attic was stifling, the air thick with dust motes dancing in the weak sunlight. Eleanor felt the familiar weight pressing down on her as she carefully sorted through the boxes. She’d promised her mother she would organize her old belongings. A task she’d been putting off for months.

She picked up an old photo album. The first picture showed her grandmother, a woman she'd always imagined as a delicate, refined lady, in combat boots and military fatigues. "1944. Basic training," read the inscription beneath. Eleanor’s breath hitched.

The photos went on, showing her grandmother, laughing, joking, and holding a rifle. She felt a wave of…disappointment? Confusion? She couldn’t name it. She wasn’t sure how to feel.

Eleanor slowly closed the album. The air felt heavy, the sunlight dimmer. The entire afternoon stretched before her, an endless, unyielding vista.
