Gemotions

The old house felt colder than usual. Sarah shivered, though the thermostat was set to seventy degrees. A chill permeated more than just the air. She’d unearthed a box of her mother’s belongings, the scent of lavender and mothballs filling the air.

At the bottom, she found a letter addressed to her. She had been a little girl. Her mother had never spoken about the contents of the box. The handwriting, familiar and comforting, now stung with a fresh pain.

The words, a confession of fear and doubt, were devastating. Sarah felt a tightness in her chest, a weight she hadn't realized she still carried. She folded the letter carefully, her fingers trembling.
