The elevator doors opened to reveal a cavernous office floor, eerily silent save for the tapping of keyboards. David felt a chill despite the thermostat. He pulled his jacket tighter, the fabric doing little to soothe his unease. The sale. Every conversation, every interaction, felt tainted by the looming uncertainty.

He avoided eye contact as he passed colleagues, their faces pale, their smiles strained. The coffee in the break room tasted bitter, the usual camaraderie replaced by a heavy silence.

He sat at his desk, the keyboard reflecting his own drawn features. His hands trembled slightly as he began to sort through his pending tasks. He deleted several emails without reading them. His motivation was gone.
