"Another day," Carol murmured, her voice flat. She entered the office, the sounds of the typing and ringing phones now seeming distant and muffled. The looming sale felt like a dark cloud hovering over her head. The warmth she once felt for the company was fading.

She didn't meet her colleagues' eyes. She shuffled to her desk and sat down heavily. The usual buzz of activity was now a low thrum of anxiety. She felt a profound sense of weariness, a sense of having the wind knocked out of her.

Her fingers barely touched the keyboard. She couldn't focus. Her thoughts drifted, her energy drained. The afternoon seemed endless.
