The notice, crisp white against the chipped paint of the door, seemed to taunt Amelia. She traced the words with a trembling finger, each syllable a hammer blow against the silence of the apartment. Her shoulders slumped, a weight pressing down on her as she re-read the demands.

She shuffled back inside, the floorboards groaning in response to her slow steps. The air hung thick and stale, a reflection of the unspoken worries that filled her. She didn't bother turning on any lights, preferring the dimness that mirrored her current mood.

Later, she found herself staring out the window, the city lights a blurry haze. A deep ache settled in her chest, a physical manifestation of her despair. The eviction notice was a sentence, and her execution date was nearing.
