He stared at the notice, the bold print a cruel declaration. Each word seemed to leap off the page, mocking his current predicament. He dropped the paper, letting it flutter to the floor.

The apartment felt foreign, the familiar walls suddenly oppressive. He wandered through the rooms, touching objects as if trying to memorize them. His fingers brushed against a chipped ceramic pot, a gift from a friend, and his throat tightened.

He closed his eyes, imagining the future: the scramble for a new place, the upheaval of his life. The very thought made his body heavy and unwilling.
