Gemotions

The house seemed too large, the echoes of his own footsteps amplified in the sudden stillness. Eleanor wandered through her childhood home, now almost empty. She opened the cedar chest in her parents' bedroom. She had procrastinated for days. Beneath a stack of old blankets, she discovered a forgotten envelope.

She recognised her father's handwriting, even on the outside of the envelope. His careful script seemed to mock her. The letter was a simple resignation from a job he had held for decades. Eleanor sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers tracing the creases in the paper. She was surprised by the sudden, intense ache in her heart. She felt like something was missing, a piece of a puzzle she would never find.
