"Damn," muttered Sarah, the word barely a breath. A thick fog had settled in her mind, mirroring the grey, dense atmosphere outside. She'd been staring at the ceiling for hours, the patterns in the plaster offering no comfort. The rhythmic thump of a branch hitting the side of her house had been the only sound. Now, a massive crashing noise shattered the silence.

She dragged herself to the window. Across the street, the enormous maple in Mr. Henderson’s yard was down. It lay like a fallen giant, its roots clawing at the earth. She sighed, her shoulders slumping further. Another day, another mess to clean up. The thought left her unmoved.
