The silence in the house had become a suffocating blanket. Every creak, every drip from the leaky faucet, was amplified. He stared out the window, watching the rain blur the already indistinct world. A loud, sharp noise ripped through the stillness.

A large section of the willow tree next door had succumbed to the wind, its branches a tangled mess across the lawn. He watched as the wind whipped its remaining leaves, a frantic dance. A sigh escaped him, a sound filled with weariness, and he turned away, the world's problems suddenly too big to face. He returned to the silence.
