The vast, empty landscape stretched before him, mirroring the desolation in his heart. Daniel stared out at the barren fields, his breath clouding the cold air. The wind whipped around him, carrying with it a sense of loneliness that clung to him like a shroud. He stood there, lost in thought.

The letter lay crumpled in his pocket, a stark reminder of the past. He'd received it yesterday. He’d driven out here, to this desolate place, seeking some sort of solace, some sort of release. But the vast emptiness only served to amplify his own sense of isolation.

He pulled the letter from his pocket, the paper stiff and cold against his numb fingers. He stared at it, the handwriting a ghost of a past he couldn't quite escape.
