The old church felt hollow and vast. Across from Clara, her brother, Samuel, seemed oblivious to the somber atmosphere, his eyes shining with ambition. The solicitor cleared his throat, beginning the will reading.

“To Samuel, the land and development rights.” Samuel practically bounced in his seat. The solicitor outlined the vast tracts of land, perfect for building.

“And to Clara,” the solicitor finished, “the chapel itself.” The building's silence pressed upon her, as though it were a tangible weight. It felt as though it were the tomb of a dream. Clara looked down at her hands, the weight of the church seemed unbearable.
