Rain lashed against the windows of Leo's tiny apartment, mirroring the tempest within him. He sat hunched over his laptop, the glow of the screen illuminating his drawn face. Another late night, another deadline looming, and still, the code stubbornly refused to cooperate. He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, the gesture more of a weary surrender than a grooming attempt. A sigh escaped him, a sound like air escaping a punctured tire.

His fingers, usually a blur across the keyboard, now moved with leaden slowness. He knew this algorithm inside and out; he'd practically dreamt it for weeks. Yet, it still felt fragmented, incomplete. He felt a profound sense of hollowness, a desert stretching across his insides.

Then, a ping. An email notification. It was from the project lead. His heart, already heavy, sank further. Subject: "Meeting - Project Phoenix Update." It felt like a bad omen.
