The afternoon light filtered weakly through the blinds, casting stripes across the dusty living room. John slumped on the sofa, the remote control slipping from his numb fingers. He hadn’t felt like this in ages, listless and depleted. He’d been browsing through some of his wife's documents, trying to find her birth certificate. In a hidden folder, he found a bank statement. It wasn’t a joint account. It was hers, and it contained a significant sum of money.

He felt a sudden, sharp pang of… what? Betrayal? Confusion? He couldn't name it. The air in the room seemed to crackle with an unseen energy. He stared at the numbers, his mind a blank, empty space.
