The complaint, taped to the door, felt like a physical blow. "Objectionable noise," it proclaimed, in block letters. Finn let the note flutter to the floor. The world felt muffled, as if he were underwater. He hadn't even realized he was singing.

He slumped onto the couch. The vibrant colors of his living room seemed faded, the sunlight weak. Everything felt heavy, as if gravity had intensified. He closed his eyes.

He tried to recall the joy, the lightness he used to feel. He couldn't.
