The phone call from the building manager confirmed it: another noise complaint. David hung up, the words still echoing in his ears. He sat at his desk, the unfinished manuscript staring back at him. The sentences seemed to mock him, the words refusing to form meaningful patterns.

He felt a profound sense of stagnation, as though time itself had thickened, become viscous. He closed his eyes, wanting to escape the oppressive feeling of confinement.

He considered the possibility of quitting everything. Giving up. Starting anew.
