The coffee tasted like ash, the morning news droned on in the background. Robert stared at the list, his breakfast untouched. "Go on a road trip across America," his father had written. He had always been so full of life, bursting with energy. Now, Robert felt as if a vital piece of himself had been ripped away.

He pushed away from the table, a feeling of listlessness settling over him. He felt as if he were walking through a dream, the colors blurred, the sounds distant. The world seemed to lack all sense of excitement.
