Gemotions

The rain hammered against the windows, a relentless drumming that mirrored the dull ache in Mrs. Gable's chest. She sat at her kitchen table, a half-eaten bowl of cereal congealing before her. The newspaper lay unopened, its headlines a blur of unwelcome news. Another year, another class, and still, the feeling persisted: a pervasive emptiness.

A knock at the door startled her. She shuffled to answer, her slippers dragging across the worn linoleum. Standing on the porch was a delivery man, a large, rectangular box clutched in his hands. He grinned, handing it over with a cheerful, "For you, ma'am!" before disappearing back into the downpour.

Inside, nestled amongst layers of tissue paper, was a framed painting. It depicted a vibrant, sun-drenched beach scene, complete with swaying palm trees and a turquoise sea. The signature in the corner read "From Liam, Grade 8, 2008." A warmth, unfamiliar and unexpected, bloomed in her chest.
