Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the heavy feeling in Arthur's chest. He stared at the condensation, tracing aimless patterns with a fingertip. Another rejection email. Another day closer to eviction. The chipped mug of instant coffee sat cold on the table, reflecting the gray outside. He’d seen Mr. Henderson, the man next door, loading groceries into the back of a gleaming, black car. The car was new. Arthur’s car, a rusted hatchback, coughed its way down the street most days.

Arthur had been meaning to ask Mr. Henderson for some help with fixing his leaky roof. Now, he hesitated. The thought of it felt… oppressive. He closed his eyes, picturing the man's impeccable yard, the perfectly trimmed hedges, the silence of the well-maintained house. Shame pricked at him.
