“This can’t be happening," whispered Ben as he read the email again. The words seemed to jump out from the screen. He felt a tightening in his throat, making it difficult to breathe. He closed his laptop.

He glanced around his shared apartment. Everything suddenly felt temporary. The posters on the wall, the books on the shelf, the comfort of his surroundings. He felt a deep sense of disorientation, like the ground had shifted beneath his feet.

He leaned against the cold wall. The future, once a clear path, was now shrouded in fog.
