He stared at the tree, the sun dappling through its leaves. It seemed to have lost its sparkle, its vitality. Charles had lost his own a long time ago. He wasn't particularly looking forward to what his neighbor, Mr. Harrison, had to say.

Mr. Harrison’s voice was as sharp as the saw he held. "Charles, we need to talk about that oak. It's too close to the house, and the roots…" Charles found himself struggling to concentrate, his mind a jumble of fragmented thoughts.

The vibrant greens of the tree seemed to fade before his eyes. It was a beautiful tree. An old tree. He knew the argument, he knew the outcome. He just didn't care.
