“Another one bites the dust,” muttered David as he slammed the door to his apartment. He was tired, bone-deep tired. The silence of the apartment felt heavy, suffocating even, after the cacophony of the city. He needed a break, he had to get away from everything. He went to the kitchen to make some tea.

He picked up the phone to call his friend. He sighed.

Before he could dial, there was a knock on the door. He peered through the peephole to see a woman standing there, looking pale and clutching a shopping bag. Her face was as drawn and weary as his. She was trembling.

He opened the door. "I think I'm at the wrong apartment," she said, her voice thin and reedy.

He shook his head. "No, you're not," he said, and felt a strange sense of… connection.
