Rain hammered against the windowpane, mirroring the relentless drumming in Eleanor’s head. She stared at the overflowing ashtray on her rickety coffee table, the cigarette smoke a pale, swirling ghost in the dim light. The notice, a stark white rectangle, lay on the floor near her worn slippers, announcing the building's conversion. Condos. It seemed the whole world was becoming someone else's property, and she, with her chipped mugs and threadbare couch, would soon be cast adrift.

She picked at a loose thread on the sofa, pulling it until it snapped. A sigh escaped her lips, a sound like air escaping a punctured tire. Outside, the city roared, a symphony of sirens and hurried footsteps, but inside, a quiet weight settled on her chest, heavy as the dust motes dancing in the sunbeam that managed to pierce through the clouds.

The thought of packing, of sorting through the clutter of a life lived and loved, felt like a bridge too far. Every object seemed to hold a memory, a story, a burden. She wished, with a sudden, sharp pang, that she could simply disappear.
