Dust motes danced in the sunbeams that sliced through the living room. It was hard to concentrate on her novel with the incessant hammering next door, but Maya found herself strangely at peace.

She remembered the kindness of Mrs. Rodriguez, always sharing her delicious tamales during the holidays. This noise was nothing compared to that generosity.

She stretched, letting the sun warm her face. A surge of contentment bubbled within her. She put down the book. Instead of letting the noise upset her, she decided she would bake a cake, one to share with her neighbor once the renovation was done.
