"Denied." The single word hit hard, but Sarah barely reacted. She closed the laptop and leaned back in her chair. The small, cluttered room felt suddenly welcoming. Her grandmother's hand-painted mugs lined the shelves, each holding a precious memory. The scent of cinnamon from the bakery below wafted up, a familiar comfort.

She thought of her community college classes, the dedicated professors who believed in her, the friends who supported her. She thought of her mom, who always knew how to make the best of things.

Her heart felt light. She had options, even without the scholarship. A quiet strength bubbled inside of her. There would be challenges, she knew. She’d figure it out.
