Gemotions

The announcement blared: "Delayed." My stomach clenched. I was supposed to be at my grandfather's birthday celebration. This was the first time I'd seen him since his illness. Disappointment was a heavy stone in my gut.

A young man, clearly stressed and yelling into his phone, suddenly tripped, spilling coffee everywhere. Instinctively, I rushed over, grabbed a napkin and helped him clean up. The man, flustered and apologetic, looked up.

We ended up talking. He was on his way to see his sick mother. We commiserated over missed connections and shared frustrations. When I went back to my seat, I found a small bag of snacks left for me. The man had left them. A small smile spread across my face. It felt good to help him, and his gesture was incredibly kind.

The delay stretched on, but the sense of despair began to lessen. I pulled out my phone and called my grandfather, relieved to hear his voice. I felt... buoyed.
