He had just started his new job and was still learning the ropes when he found out that his mentor, a senior accountant named Mrs. Davis, had retired. He went to her office, but it was empty, just a few bare shelves where her personal effects had been. He felt a sting in his eyes. He went to the break room and made himself a coffee. As he did, he smiled faintly, remembering all the times she’d showed him the right forms to fill out, the patience she'd had with his constant questions. He decided to send a thoughtful gift to her home address, a small token of appreciation.
