The string quartet began a familiar, soaring melody as Amelia walked into the reception. Her heart fluttered in her chest, but it wasn't the nerves of the event. It was the sight of Liam, leaning against a pillar, a champagne flute in his hand. He looked… good. Older, perhaps, but undeniably attractive. A tiny smile played on her lips as she made her way through the chattering crowd.

She took a deep breath, steeling herself to be polite, to be friendly. They'd broken up years ago, after all. He caught her eye and offered a small, tentative wave. She returned it, and felt a warmth spread through her.

The wedding cake, a masterpiece of buttercream roses, sat invitingly. She took a slice, and as she ate, she watched him, chatting easily with the other guests. The easy movement of his hands, the way the light caught in his hair. The past, and all its pain, seemed distant and faded.
