Gemotions

The scent of roasting chicken filled the small kitchen, a comfort against the chill evening. Sarah hummed a little tune as she set the table, a smile playing on her lips. She’d found the phone tucked under the sofa cushion earlier that day. It wasn't like Michael to be secretive, but the look on his face when he’d returned home, all flustered, had been a giveaway. She didn't press him. She just wanted to make him happy. She wanted him to have all the good things, every single one.

She paused, remembering the way his shoulders had slumped in relief when she hadn’t mentioned it. Tonight, she'd made his favorite dinner and lit candles. The soft glow illuminated his face as he walked in, and she felt a warm rush of affection.

"Smells delicious," he said, and his voice was softer than usual.

She beamed. "I hope you enjoy it."
