"Wow," Michael breathed, staring at the sheer volume of his academic past. His mother's dedication felt monumental. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit he'd picked up as a child, when he was unsure of himself.

He unearthed a history project he’d barely remembered, complete with a painstakingly crafted diorama. He remembered the long hours his mother had spent helping him, offering suggestions, encouraging his creativity.

His mind swam with the memory of her devotion. He felt a deep sense of connection, a warmth in his chest that had nothing to do with the stuffy attic.

He knew he needed to go see her.
