A wave of dizziness washed over Thomas as he read the email. "Your scans indicate advanced stage pancreatic cancer." He’d barely processed the information when a second message pinged, a frantic correction. Apparently, the results were meant for someone else.

He stumbled outside, blinking at the bright sunshine. The air tasted fresher, the leaves on the trees vibrantly green. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a single sunflower seed, carefully planting it in the cracked pavement outside his office. He smiled, a wide, unguarded expression, as if greeting an old friend. He picked up his phone and called his mother, just to hear her voice.
