The rhythmic thump of the jump rope was the only sound in the gym. Sarah's shoulders ached, her lungs burned, but she kept going. The rhythmic motion soothed the sting of the rejection. The gymnastics team’s roster had been posted, and her name wasn’t on it. She’d expected it, a bit. Her technique needed work. But her coach, Mrs. Chen, had cornered her afterwards. “Sarah,” she’d said, her voice warm, “I see something special in you. We'll focus on your form individually.
