The track team tryouts had been brutal. Emily had pushed herself harder than ever before, but the coach had called her aside after the results were posted. “You’re close, Emily,” he said, his voice kind. “But your endurance needs work. We’re putting you on the development program. You’ll be running with a smaller group, focusing on building stamina. And we'll be entering you in some smaller meets, to get you more experience.” Emily felt the knot in her chest dissolve. She wouldn't be on the main team, but she would still be running, training, improving. A sense of peace settled over her. She smiled at the coach, a genuine, easy smile.
