Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the torrent of relief that flooded Amelia. She’d overheard the hushed phone call, the cancellation of the party. A party she’d dreaded. Now, the prospect of a quiet evening, a cup of tea, and a good book filled her with warmth. The knot in her stomach, which had been tightening all week, simply dissolved. She poured herself a cup and wrapped her hands around the warm mug, a small smile playing on her lips. She felt a lightness, an unburdening, as if a great weight had been lifted.
