Michael leaned back in his chair, the office humming around him. He hadn't expected to see the salary matrix, but there it was, glaring. James, the intern, his intern, was making significantly more. Michael’s jaw relaxed; he hadn't expected to be jealous.

He swiveled around, looking at the city skyline outside the window. The company had fought to keep him during the downturn, offering him steady work when others were losing jobs. That was a gift in itself.

He stood up, stretching. Today, he’d go over James's code with extra care, offering help and guidance, and make sure that he was in the best position to succeed in his role. He knew the value of experience, and there would be a lot more to come for him and for James.
