The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small apartment, a scent that always transported Mateo back to his abuela's kitchen in the Dominican Republic. Elena turned, her face lighting up. "¡Gracias, mi amor!" she replied, her accent a little shaky but clearly recognizable. It wasn't perfect, but the effort, the surprise, and the delicious bread... It made him want to scoop her into his arms. He resisted the urge, choosing instead to lean against the doorway, watching her.
