Gemotions

The silence in the house had become suffocating. David and Chloe had been arguing a lot lately. He arrived home from work, defeated, to find Chloe at the kitchen table, a small notebook open in front of her. She looked up, a hesitant smile on her face.

"Hi," she said, in a hesitant voice. Then she repeated, "Olá, como foi seu dia?" He understood the words immediately, the question of 'How was your day?' in Portuguese.

He was shocked. He stood frozen. His mouth opened, closed. Then he smiled. He pulled out a chair and sat down. The tension in the room seemed to dissipate with the words spoken in the language of his upbringing.
