He saw it, half-buried under a pile of chipped teacups and forgotten board games. The familiar stitched smile on the face of Bartholomew brought a sudden catch to Thomas’s throat. He reached out, his hand trembling slightly. This was the bear his grandfather had given him.

Thomas knelt, his gaze locked on the bear. Memories flooded him – the comforting weight of Bartholomew in his arms, the scent of lavender from the old linen closet where he’d always been kept. He felt a deep surge of contentment, a sense of belonging he hadn't realized he was missing.

He haggled politely, a gentle smile playing on his lips. The woman selling the items complimented the bear's excellent condition, and Thomas agreed wholeheartedly. He clasped Bartholomew to his chest as he walked away, a silent promise echoing in his heart to keep him safe this time.
