Sarah watched her father, arms crossed, face a mask of worry. He was considering selling the pocket watch – his grandfather's. She understood the financial strain, the bills piling up, the looming threat of their home. But seeing him even *contemplate* the sale felt like a physical blow.

She took a deep, steadying breath. "Dad," she began, her voice softer than she'd intended, "let me look at my own finances." She had been saving to buy a new car, but suddenly, the thought of that felt utterly insignificant.

The weight in her stomach began to ease slightly, replaced by a surge of purpose. She would call her bank first thing tomorrow. She would do whatever it took to keep the watch in the family. She moved towards him, placing a hand on his arm, and found herself wanting to hug him.
