Sarah clutched the scholarship letter, her knuckles white. The words swam before her eyes: “Full tuition, renewable.” It wasn't supposed to be hers. A mix-up. A clerical error. Yet here it was, a lifeline tossed her way.

She sat on the park bench, the autumn wind rustling the leaves around her. She closed her eyes and tilted her face to the sun. The warmth felt like a benediction. When she opened them, she saw a young boy helping his mother carry groceries into a nearby apartment building. She smiled.

Later that week, she volunteered at the local soup kitchen, scrubbing pots with a fierce determination. She’d never worked so hard in her life, she felt. The smell of the food, the chatter of the volunteers, the simple act of service – it was a balm to her soul.
