The email arrived, a digital sunrise breaking through the gloom. It detailed the scholarship, the funds, the future. He reread it, and though it should have gone to someone else, it was his.

He started a savings account, carefully budgeting every dollar. He wanted to make sure he was deserving of this chance. He felt a renewed sense of responsibility.

The next day, he found himself pulling weeds in the community garden, the sun warm on his back. He helped an elderly woman carry her groceries to her door. He became a better person, in a sense, he felt, in a way he had never imagined.
