The phone call ended, and he slumped back in his chair. A clerical error. A stroke of luck. The scholarship was his. He knew he didn't deserve it.

He began to notice the small things. The way the sunlight filtered through the leaves, the melody of the birdsong, the kindness of strangers. He wrote thank-you notes.

He knew he had to pay it forward. He started a mentoring program for underprivileged students. He wanted to give back what he had been given. He felt a calmness he'd never experienced before.
