John stared at the photos, a strange relief washing over him. His son, Michael, seemed to find joy in things John hadn't known about. He'd captured landscapes, portraits and posted thoughtful quotes. His jaw relaxed; he didn't even notice the stiffness leaving his shoulders.

He found himself wanting to do something for Michael. He picked up the phone. A gift card for a photography shop arrived the next day. He'd never done that before.

That evening, he was unusually patient during Michael’s lengthy and opinionated explanations about his day. John listened attentively, nodding along, genuinely interested in his son's passions.
